The Theme of Leadership in the ‘Lord of the Flies’
Throughout the novel, ââ¬ËLord of the Fliesââ¬â¢, William Golding is able to link the many aspects of our own world through the various characters he creates. One of these aspects is leadership, which plays a vital role in the novelââ¬â¢s microcosmic society, as it does in our own society. Golding uses leadership to convey his ideologies about human nature. Golding believes that all humans are fundamentally flawed, that all humans are evil and are capable of inflicting evil upon others. Only the law and order of our society hold back the flaws that all humans inherently possess.Golding uses the mixed feelings that he has about leadership to reveal his philosophy about human nature and other flawed aspects of our society. The Second World War, which Golding was a part of, brought about his pessimism of human nature. He was horrified at what himself and others did during the war. He gradually learned to see all human nature as savage and unforgiving, the darkness of mans heart ; it is in all of us. The qualities of a good leader are universally accepted. The leader has to have control over his followers. He has to demand respect. The leader also has to be able to persuade his followers to follow him without taking away from his beliefs and views. A good leader also has to be able to be strong, mentally more than physically. He needs to be able to stand his ground and strongly believe in what he feels is right. A good leader also has to believe in himself. If a leader does not believe in himself, then who will? A leader has to be assertive and does not need to back down from anything. The two main characters in this novel express some of these characteristics, one character more than the other. There are always people, when in a group, who show and possess superior leadership attributes than others. The strongest, mentally and physically, tend to have the greatest influence over others. Sometimes the strongest person is not necessarily the best choice. Autho rs, including Golding, often show how humans select the strongest person, to give us an understanding of the influence people can possess over others. Golding has two stand out characters in the beginning of the novel who each show their own, but very different leadership skills. However Golding believes that there is no such thing as a perfect leader, and that every type of leadership is flawed in some way. Golding intends to use these two characters to highlight the two types of leadership that he tries to present in the novel. The first character introduced to us is Ralph, who in my opinion is presented as the better leader. His capacity for leadership is evident from the beginning, ââ¬Å"Shut up,â⬠said Ralph absently. He lifted the conch. ââ¬Å"Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things. He then proceeds to be voted as the group leader, over Jack, mainly due to the fact that he was the one that initially blew the conch, ââ¬Å"They obeyed the summons of the con ch, partly because Ralph blew it, and he was big enough to be a link with the adult world of authorityâ⬠¦. â⬠It is obvious from the offset that Golding has made Ralph the symbol of democracy in the novel. Golding shows his feeling about democracy as describing democratic voting as a ââ¬Ëtoyââ¬â¢. The other littleââ¬â¢uns follow Ralph as he is the only link they have left to the civilised world. At the beginning and throughout the novel, Ralph is the primary representative of order, society and leadership among the group. Ralph starts off well at attempting to make a new society; he firmly believes that the most important thing in this situation is being rescued. He creates a fire beacon, for cooking, heat and rescue. The signal fire can be viewed as a sign of hope ââ¬â the hope the boys have to return to society. When the flames dance brightly, it shows the enthusiasm they hold for the idea of being rescued. However, as the fire grows dim, it reflects the attitu de of the boys and their loss of morale. The signal fire can also be viewed as the boys' link to the civilized world. As long as the fire continues burning, it suggests not only that the boys want to return to society, but also that they are still using their common sense. He understands the essentials that a society must have to keep afloat and he knows what must be done in order for the survival of the boys. He works vigilantly to keep the group's focus on the hope of rescue. It is at the second assembly that we see Ralph firmly asserting his authority, ââ¬Å"except by meâ⬠. It is also the first time that Jack struggles with Ralphââ¬â¢s authority. As the tension between Ralph and Jack continues to increases, we see more obvious signs of a potential struggle for power. Although Jack has been deeply envious of Ralphââ¬â¢s power from the moment Ralph was elected, the two do not come into open conflict until the fourth chapter, when Jackââ¬â¢s irresponsibility leads to th e failure of the signal fire. When the fireââ¬âa symbol of the boysââ¬â¢ connection to civilizationââ¬âgoes out, the boysââ¬â¢ first chance of being rescued is thwarted. Ralph flies into a rage, indicating that he is still governed by desire to achieve the good of the whole group. But Jack, having just killed a pig, is too excited by his success to care very much about the missed chance to escape the island. Indeed, Jackââ¬â¢s bloodlust and thirst for power have overwhelmed his interest in civilization. Whereas he previously justified his commitment to hunting by claiming that it was for the good of the group, now he no longer feels the need to justify his behaviour at all. Instead, he indicates his new orientation toward savagery by painting his face like a barbarian, leading wild chants among the hunters, and apologizing for his failure to maintain the signal fire only when Ralph seems ready to fight him over it.However, Ralph still has his shortcomings as a leader and isnââ¬â¢t always perfect as Golding is trying to show. One of his first mistakes was giving more control to Jack by making him leader of his hunters. This allows Jack and the choir boys to make their own rules and encourage the choir boys to stray away from Ralphââ¬â¢s lead. When the beast is first introduced, Ralph doesnââ¬â¢t do a very good job of convincing the younger boys that there isnââ¬â¢t a beast on the island. He just sayââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"but there isnââ¬â¢t a beast. â⬠Whereas Jack assures the younger boys that if there is a beast, heââ¬â¢d find it and kill it.The weight of leadership becomes oppressive for Ralph as the story continues; he is dutiful and dedicated, but his attempts to instil order and calm among the boys are decreasingly successful. Golding develops Ralph's particular concerns and insecurities. By showing him worrying over his perceived failures, Golding highlights Ralphââ¬â¢s responsible, adult nature. Ralph's concern about his appearance, and particularly his grown-out hair, indicate his natural inclination toward the normality of civilization.Although Ralph demonstrates a more than sufficient intelligence, he also worries that he lacks Piggy's genius, ââ¬Å"if only I could step inside that fat head of hisâ⬠. Ralph eventually understands the importance of thought and how it can help him as a leader, ââ¬Å"thought was a valuable thing, that got resultsâ⬠¦ â⬠. The second type of leadership that Golding conveys through a character is the Dictator, Jack. Ralph treats all the boys with dignity and tries to work with them for the betterment of the society. On the opposite side of the scale, Jack does not treat any of the boys with the dignity that Ralph does.In chapter three Golding writes, in comparing Jackââ¬â¢s and Ralph, ââ¬Å"They walked along, two continents of experience and feeling, unable to communicate. â⬠This shows how Golding is trying to tell us how Ralph and Jackâ⬠â¢s motives are completely different; one is focused on hunting and the other on the society. Jack immediately shows qualities of a good leader, but are different qualities than Ralph shows. Jack has a very commanding presence from the beginning; he arrives on the island having some success in exerting control over others by dominating the choir with his militaristic attitude. At the first assembly he believes that he should be chief, ââ¬Å"I ought to be chiefâ⬠, but is humiliated when he loses the vote to Ralph. Jack is chauvinistic, stating that, ââ¬Å"I agree with Ralph. We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything. So we've got to do the right things. â⬠Golding believes that Nationalism and chauvinism are the causes of wars on our society and is putting this across in the microcosm. This is a hint that there would be eventually conflict on the island.Golding also uses the theory of Darwini sm to relate to Jack, as Jack puts down the weaker in society, Piggy and Simon, like most dictators do. Jack represents evil and violence, the dark side of human nature. He is the character that regresses the most throughout the novel. It starts with him hunting in the Jungle, when Golding uses animal imagery to show his regression, ââ¬Ëape-likeââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëhalf nakedâ⬠¦walking on all foursââ¬â¢. Jack attempts to dominate the group, rather than working with Ralph to benefit it.The conch does not mean anything to Jack, for him, the conch represents the rules and boundaries that have kept him from dominating others. Their entire lives in the other world, the boys had been moderated by rules set by society. The dictator in Jack becomes dominant in his personality during the panic over the beast sighting on the mountain. In trying to put Ralph down, he uses his rhetorical skills to twist Ralph's words. In defence, he offers to the group an excuse that ââ¬Å"He'd never have got us meat,â⬠asserting that hunting skills make for an effective leader.Jack assigns a high value only to those who he finds useful or agreeable to his views and looks to silence those who do not please him. Denouncing the rules of order, Jack declares, ââ¬Å"We don't need the conch any more. We know who ought to say things. â⬠As Jack strives to establish his leadership, he takes on the title of ââ¬Å"chiefâ⬠and reinforces the illusion of station and power by using the other boys ceremoniously as standard bearers who raise their spears together and announce ââ¬Å"The Chief has spoken. Jack works closely with Roger, as Ralph does with Piggy and Simon, to help him form his new dictatorship at Castle Rock. Though Roger does not possess any sort of leadership skills, he does have a forced authority over others. This role is no game for him, though; by the night of Simon's death, Jack has clearly gone power-mad, sitting at the pig roast on a large log ââ¬Å"pa inted and garlanded . . . like an idolâ⬠while ââ¬Å"power . . . chattered in his ear like an ape. â⬠His tribe addresses him as ââ¬Å"Chief,â⬠indicating a form of more primitive tribal leadership.Jackââ¬â¢s leadership in the macrocosm would not work, it would just lead to war. Whereas on the island Jack promises food and fun, so everybody follows him. Jackââ¬â¢s savage, primitive society murders the two outcasts, Piggy and Simon. The next on their list is Ralph, who is finding himself running away from a line of Jackââ¬â¢s group across the island. In the midst of the chaos, the forest is set on fire. As Ralph is running away, he unselfishly thinks, ââ¬ËThe fools! The fire must be almost at the fruit trees- what would they eat tomorrow.Even though Jackââ¬â¢s tribe is hunting him down, all he cares about are the others. At the end of the novel, a naval officer comes onto the island. When he asks who is in charge, Jack steps forward and then steps back . He finally realizes that what he was doing was wrong and cowers away from the naval officer, thinking that Ralph would take all of the blame. Ralph loudly proclaims the he is the leader. They had all finally come to realize what they had done. They soon discovered that if they had followed Ralph, none of this would have happened. hen the naval officer appears on the island, all the boys who were moments ago behaving savagely, come to a halt and suddenly return to their senses. This suggests that the appearance of the naval officer symbolizes the return of both adult supervision and civilization. Ralph was the best leader in the novel, he puts the society over himself at all times. Jack has the better leadership skills, but chooses to use them for the wrong reasons. The fact that he came to be the leader was because of humanity's sinful tendency towards savagery.

Jaws
The film ââ¬ËJawsââ¬â¢, was made in 1975 and is a thriller set on a small American town called Amityville. The film is about a man-eating great white shark that terrorises the seas of Amityville and itââ¬â¢s public who swim in it. Steven Spielberg directs this nail-biting thriller. ââ¬ËJawsââ¬â¢ is set on the 4th of July, which is an American Independence day. This film will keep you on the edge of your seats. This essay will show how Spielberg creates tension and suspense throughout the film. One of the most famous techniques used in the film ââ¬ËJawsââ¬â¢ was the music. At the start of the film the screen is dark and the music begins. The pitch is low and the tempo is slow, as the sequence goes on the tempo starts to speed up and the pitch gets higher. When the tempo of the music speeds up it is like the heartbeat of the shark, which is getting faster because the shark is getting excited about something. At the same time the audience get nervous about what the shark is preparing to do. This sequence is used throughout the film to make the audience aware that the shark is about to attack. Before the first attack is about to happen there is a lot of chatter, firelight and mouth organs being played. This makes it a good contrast to the scary scene that is about to happen. When the girl runs off with the drunken boy the scene starts to get darker and quieter as they go further and further away from where all the people are. The girl runs into the water and the drunken boy lies down on the beach. The camera then points at the girl who is all alone in the water and there is no sound or light at all which makes the audience think that something bad is about to happen. This is really helpful to build tension and to begin putting fear in the mindââ¬â¢s of the audience, through the contrasts in the setting and in the changes in the music. As well as the use of music in this film Spielberg similarly uses camera techniques to scare the audience. Before the second attack the camera shows a mid shot at the boy and the women who are close together which makes the audience think that the relationship between these two people is like mother and child. While Brody watches the sea Spielberg uses mid shots, medium close ups and close up shots to show that Brody is getting more anxious. Then there is a point of view shot which is shot under water were the audience can see everyoneââ¬â¢s legs. This creates a sense of dramatic irony where the audience know that something is underneath their feet but the people in the water donââ¬â¢t. As the second attack starts Brody realises suddenly what is happening and the camera zooms into his face. The camera also starts to show lots of flashing images of people panicking and the boy being eaten. This scares the audience because they have just witnessed an innocent child being eaten. This keeps the tension up in the film which makes the audience think that if it can kill an innocent child, how much further will it go. Another way Spielberg builds up tension is by how he portrays the shark. In the first attack he doesnââ¬â¢t show the shark; this makes the audience think and imagine what is lurking under the waters. He also shows how strong this shark is when in the first attack the creature attacks the girl and swings her from side to side and eventually pulls her into the water. Also into the second attack the creature eats the little boy and rips his Lillo to shreds. Throughout the film Spielberg reveals the shark bit by bit. Spielberg also shows real shark footage (when he films the attack in the cage) to make it look real and scare the audience, the audience is eager to see the shark which is another reason why he filmed it using a real shark. On the last attack the shark jumps onto the boat, the audience find it amusing because throughout the film theyââ¬â¢ve been getting scared of a model shark. When the shark bites the girl you can from her face immediately that she is in pain she also shows this because she screams hysterically which makes the audience think what is happening to her. Spielberg avoids the shark at this point because itââ¬â¢s so early in the film and if he shows it at this stage then the audience will realise that itââ¬â¢s only a model shark and there would be no point watching the film. Another reason why he didnââ¬â¢t show the shark at this stage is because he wouldnââ¬â¢t have caught the audience out at the nd. So instead he used the charactersââ¬â¢ reaction to show the power and the strength of the shark. Finally the way the story progresses will add to the tension of the film. Spielberg films the first two attacks together so throughout the film the audience will except an attack at any time which will make them always feel tense. The 4th of July is an American Independence Day which is a public holiday for everyone. It is summer and all the people are at the seaside having a good time. Spielberg chose this scene because there are more people in danger which leads to a dramatic affect. This attack also involves Brodyââ¬â¢s son, which keeps the audience tense because we know who Brodyââ¬â¢s son is. The more you know about a character the more the more tense you will feel about them when they are being attacked. For example the last section of the film when all the main characters are under attack in this scene, the fact that we know more about the characters makes every moment tense when the shark circles around them. Overall, the most tense moment in the film is the scene when the shark is attacking the cage. This scene is particularly scary because Spielberg used a real shark to film this scene which looks bigger and scarier, and the way it bent the cage bars really showed how strong the shark is. This is what I think is the most tense scene and is the scene that made most of the audience tense. These are the most important techniques that Steven Spielberg used to build tension and suspense in the audienceââ¬â¢s minds.

Introduction of Green Building Material Essay
Materials are the stuff of economic life in our industrial world. They include the resource inputs and the product outputs of industrial production. How we handle them is a major determinant of real economic efficiency, and also has a major impact on our health and the health of the natural environment The built-environment is also a strategic realm of social, economic and environmental change. Various writers have stated that spatial redesign of the landscape and built-environment may be the single most effective means of achieving new levels of efficiency and sustainability (Lyle, 1994; Mollison, 1983; Alexander, 1977; Van der Ryn & Cowan, 1996). Building materials are also quite important. They have been estimated that building materials make up forty percent of material through-put of entire economy (Milani, 2001). In the book ââ¬Å"Green Building: Project Planning and Cost Estimatingâ⬠, Keenan and Georges (2002) identified some key characteristics of green building materials. As regards green building materials, they should be healthy for the internal environment, healthy for the natural environment, minimize building energy use, have low embodied energy, be reusable, recyclable and/or biodegradable, and be locally obtained. Embodied energy is a concept that takes into account several factors to determine the energy needed to produce a product and can be used as a comparison between different materials. There is some controversy surrounding embodied energy as there is no internationally agreed method for calculating this value and many times it is not known what has been accounted for (Woolley and Kimmins, 2005). For example, cement has an embodied energy of 7. 8 MJ/kg, while virgin steel is 32. 0, and recycled steel is 10. 1 MJ/kg (Keenan and Georges, 2002). In these values however, consideration is not given to transportation, durability, reuse and recycling. These factors could significantly alter the original values. Building materials are also the stuff of our personal environments. They are all around us, and literally part of the air we breathe. They can damage the biosphere: VOCs from paints alone are responsible for perhaps 9 percent of the damage to the ozone layer. They can also damage us: the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for example, estimates that indoor pollutionââ¬âcaused by materials like paints, plastics and particleboardsââ¬âis responsible for more than 11,000 deaths each year from cancer, kidney failure, and respiratory collapse (Ligon, 2001). The fact that buildings are all around us means not only that they immediately impact us, but that we can potentially affect them. The building industry is a decentralized one that exists in virtually every community. Not surprisingly, the built-environment is a major venue for ecological and community development alternatives, with materials being an increasing focus of concern over the past decade. The first is the section on Materials and Resources. This section consists of one prerequisite and eight credits. The eight credits focus on reuse and management of construction and demolition waste; using refurbished or reused materials and materials with a recycled content; using regional and rapidly renewing materials; and lastly if new wood must be used, using products certified accordance with the Forest Stewardship Councils principles and criteria The second section which pertains to building materials is Indoor Environmental Quality. The important credit is number four: Low Emitting Materials. For this credit, the Volatile Organic Carbon (VOC) content of adhesives and sealants must be less than the VOC content limits of the State of California South Coast Air Quality Management Districtââ¬â¢s (SCAQMD) rule number 1168 from October 2003. For paints, the VOC content must be less than the VOC and chemical component limits of the Green Seals Standard GS-11 from January 1997. Composite wood and laminate adhesives must contain no added urea formaldehyde resins. Concrete is a strong and durable material with a high heat storage capacity (Keenan and Georges, 2002). It is good from an indoor air quality standpoint as it is inert. The problems associated with concrete are washout water at concrete plants which can have a high pH, and the use of cement as a binding agent in concrete. Cement is very energy intensive and is a major contributor of greenhouse gases. To counteract this, up to 70% of cement in concrete can be replaced with fly ash. Fly ash is a waste product from coal fired plants. Brick, block and stone have a low embodied energy and are therefore environmentally friendly materials (Keenan and Georges, 2002). To avoid added impacts of transportation, local masonry should be used where available. STRUCTURAL FRAMING An ongoing environmental debate is wood versus steel as components for framing. Both materials have been destructive to the environment and both have advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages of wood is that it is a natural insulator while steel is a conductor. Steel is 400 times more conductive than wood (Keenan and Georges, 2002). One of the disadvantages of wood is that it needs to be treated with preservatives which can be toxic and render the wood non-biodegradable. Steel on the other hand offers resistance to insects and water rot. Steel is also recyclable. The choice between steel and wood should depend on the application they are being used for. Wood may be more environmentally friendly if you can use non-treated and certified wood. The production process is less energy intensive than for steel, and creates less pollution and environmental degradation than the mining and processing of steel (Keenan, A. , and Georges, D. , 2002). INSULATION Some of the considerations which need to be taken in account when choosing an insulation material are: 1) does it retard airflow, 2) which type will provide the best Rvalue within a reasonable thickness, 3) does it pose health risks, and 4) does it contain ozone depleting chemicals (Keenan and Georges, 2002). In the Green Building Handbook, the authors offered their choices for ââ¬Å"best buysâ⬠. Their top three choices were wool, cellulose fiber, and cork. These choices are thermally as good as conventional insulators (Woolley and Kimmins, 2005). Cellulose Fiber is made from processed waste paper, with added borates for fire and pest resistance. It is made into a fluff that can either be placed by hand or sprayed (Woolley and Kimmins, 2005). Insulation corkboard is produced by cooking cork granules at high temperature and pressure. The granules bond themselves together with their own resins (Woolley and Kimmins, 2005). ROOFING For materials used in roofing, durability is critical. One option for materials is metals, such as copper, steel and aluminium. Metal roofs are good because they can be made of recycled material and can be recycled at the end of their life cycle. They also last longer than asphalt (Frej, 2005). Cool roofs are an option that can be useful in both mild and hot climates. The roof material is covered with a reflective coating. This coating prevents the building from getting hot, reduces heat island effects and prolongs the life of a roof (Keenan and Georges, 2002). A non-petroleum based coating should be used. Living ââ¬Å"greenâ⬠roofs are another option. Green roofs are roofs that are partially or completely covered with soil and vegetation. These roofs provide environmental cooling, habitat, added insulation, storm water management, natural beauty, cleaner air and can extend the life of a roof (Keenan and Georges, 2002). One source suggested two to three times longer than a conventional roof (Frej, 2005) while another suggested they can extend the life up to 100% (Keenan and Georges, 2002). Planted roofs can require more maintenance and require a system to prevent root penetration and water seepage.

Calculation of occupant capacity - it is necessary to assess the number of people who are likely to be present in the different parts of the building. Assessment of escape routes and travel distances - check maximum travel distances from scaled floor plans. Assessment of number and widths of storey/room exits - Check that assumed numbers and widths of exits can cater for expected occupant numbers at each level. Access the need for protection and/or separation of escape routes - Establishment of the identified horizontal escape route need to be fire protected or separated form other parts of the building. 6. Why is it important to perform fire tests Answer: A fire test is a means to determine if a fire protection product would meet the minimum performance as set out by the building code. The consideration of fire testing is very important for the applicable intentions for product specification and product certification. It is also a prudent act to test products to ensure ease of use and the broad, economical applications with regards to its listing and approval use and the compliance. Fire test is also a means to gather data and information in order to understand a specific Hazard such as construction or storage configuration. 7. Why is it important to carry out more than one experiment to test the same parameter Answer: It is very important to carry out more that one experiment to test the same parameter In order to make sure that the object... Meaningful career implications Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Meaningful career implications - Essay Example Social Psychology deals with the extent at which the lives of individuals are influenced or affected by the social group they belong to (Morris & Maisto, 2005). Hence, I would use Social Psychology to understand the reason that the lives of the Military Family are influenced by the circumstances that surrounds them. Social Psychology shows the extent at which circumstances affect the life of people as it shows how the situation around people influence their lives either positively or negatively (Kagan, 2002). This would also make me understand the consequences of the circumstances that surround military officers and the effect it could likely have on their family members (Kassin, Fein, & Markus, 2008). I would use Social Psychology as a basis to understand the reasons that the family of military men is emotionally attached to each other. Social Psychology would help me understand the way these people feel and I would be able to advise them on the steps to take to fight their emotions and their apprehensions. Social psychology would help me understand the way the Military Family feel, think and behave and how their lives are influenced by the members of their family in the military.

Portfolio analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Portfolio analysis - Essay Example Correlation according to Cohen (2003) can be defined as the description of the degree in which two variables are related to each other. For example how is coffee business growth related to the weather patterns? Correlation can either be positive or negative meaning a single variable can affect the other positively or negatively. Covariance on the other hand can be defined as the manner two variables change at the same time. Covariance can be described as how two risky assets go hand-in-hand or in relation to one another (see C. Patrick Doncaster, 2007). If the covariance is positive this implies that the assets returns are simultaneous and if negative, this will imply the returns on the assets are inverse.Correlation and covariance both describe the relationships of two variables and in the way they move whether positively that is together or negatively that is inversely. Looking at the above definitions of covariance and correlation we can clearly see the relationship between the tw o in the context that correlation will determine the extent to which two variables are connected to each other while covariance will look at the same two variables and asses how they move together. Portfolio diversity is best achieved if the covariance is not in the same direction meaning the assets in the portfolio do not have perfect correlation (see Alexander, 2009). If the two asset variables do not have a direct relationship in terms of their asset returns this will mean that they do not move in the same direction ... Correlation as earlier defined is the relationship of various assets in a portfolio and how they impact on each other in terms of returns. In case assets have a low correlation according to Lhabitant (2004), this will mean that the assets have a minimal interaction in the market in terms of returns. If one of the assets is affected negatively this will not necessarily mean that the other assets will suffer the same adverse effects to the same degree but in a lesser degree. Negative correlation will mean that the assets have no relationship in terms of performance and this will mean that the performance of individual assets will be independent of the other assets in the same portfolio. A low or negative correlation will minimize the portfolio risk to very low levels because the assets will have no direct relation in terms of negative correlation or minimal relationship in terms of low correlation. This will mean all the assets will act as independent factors in the portfolio despite h aving a common investor. This will ensure that when one of the assets is not doing well in terms of return all the others will not be affected since they lack a relationship. A good portfolio is aimed at having the lowest risk and this can be best assessed by ensuring the portfolio mix is of assets with low or negative correlation. c. Diversification and why is it important to portfolio risk Diversification in terms of portfolio means minimizing the risk factor by investing in various assets (see Hagin, 2004). This will mean that an investor should not invest all his money in one asset but rather subdivide his money to be invested in various assets so that the risk is well distributed. Suppose an investor invests all his money in one asset this will mean that the risk

A cold way to get a job - Emerging Trend Research Paper
A cold way to get a job - Emerging Trend - Research Paper Example For smaller organizations, the process of selecting the right candidate is much simpler as they review the resumes they receive until that time when they find the appropriate candidate for their position. Modern tracking systems are programmed the way that enable them to scan for keywords, former employers or the years of professional experience of the candidate. This help the companies to rank the applicants on the first step of the recruitment process. Those candidates who earned low scores do not pass on the next level. However, tracking system has its pitfalls. It sometimes misses the most- qualified candidate, because that person does not include the keywords from the job description. Moreover, the idea of the system is not in replacing the human screeners entirely. It simply allows the experts to narrow the field of search to the one that hiring manager can handle. In addition, the recruitment specialists state that the only successful method of getting a job for the candidate is to obtain the referral from a previous company employer. As it was stated before, small companies usually do not deal with tracking systems, but still the job seekers are often surprised when they do not hear back anything from small organizations. These companies rarely use an applicant-tracking system, as it is cost-effective, instead they use a well- trafficked job board to gather hundreds of responses. To help the applicant to find the job of his or her dream, hiring specialists recommend different methods. Every job advertisement is different and it requires the applicant to make sure one understands each requirement. Child Abuse and Neglect of Children with Disabilities Article
Child Abuse and Neglect of Children with Disabilities - Article Example Turner et. al. (2011) had a wide sample of over 4,000 participants thus making their findings reliable. They also gave possible explanations as to why certain ability types attracted certain forms of victimizations. It was laudable that they used a comprehensive definition of disability types and did not ignore other less-visible types of disability like anxiety and post traumatic disorder. One key problem with the research is that it relied on childrenââ¬â¢s or parentââ¬â¢s self-reported diagnosis of a disability (Babbie, 2007). It is likely that some individuals may be suffering from a disability and do not even know it. Additionally, participants with more than one disability could have confounded the outcomes. If a form of victimization caused a disability earlier on in the participantââ¬â¢s life, then a cycle of victimization may result, yet the researchers were not concerned with this past. Their findings were different from others because they can assist in understanding how child abuse arises among disabled children. This can cause stakeholders to work towards eliminating those risks (Finkelhon et. al., 2005). Also, because the research looked at the rate of victimization among disability types, it would be possible to determine which groups are highly at risk and work on protecting them. Hill et. al. (2011) sought to find out the prevalence of children with disabilities in the welfare system. They did so by collecting data from Minnesotaââ¬â¢s welfare system and noting the quantity of individuals in this group. They also looked at the relationship between being identified as disabled and having a substantiated maltreatment or possessing certain demographic traits. The association between out-of-home placement and child disability in the welfare system is studied; the hypotheses were proved. This research is impressive because it considered an unlikely and often ignored category of children

Business Environment Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Business Environment - Assignment Example There are three types of business structures which are sole ownership, partnership, and corporation. Each of the three options available has its advantages and disadvantages. Sole ownership is considered the easiest type of organization to set up. If you are eager to start the computer business right away you should seriously considered the sole ownership option. To start a sole ownership business all you need to do is report your business income and expenses on your Form 1040 Schedule C (Perez, 2011). The filing of taxes is performed at the end of year. A business can choose to either go with the natural year or a fiscal year. The natural year end on December 31, 2011. The fiscal year refers to the passage of one full year after the business is started. For example if your company starting operating of March 1, 2011 the end of the fiscal year would be February 28, 2012. The owner of a small business is typically the manager of the operation. If you choose this option you have be pre pared to work long hours because you will be the person in charge. Usually only a relatively small amount of money or capital is necessary to start a business as a proprietorship (Weygand & Kieso & Kimmel, 2002). One of the disadvantages of choosing sole proprietorship is that the owner is personally liable for the debts of the entire business. There is no distinction between the business and its owner. The second type of organizational structure you can chose for your computer business is partnership. A partnership can be defined as a business owned by two or more persons. Each person in a partnership contributes money, property, labor, skill, and expects to share in the profits or losses of the business (Irs, 2010). A partnership agreement sets forth the terms of the partnership which includes initial investment, duties of each partner, and division of income. The friend that will be working with you in the business can either be an employee or a partner. If you need additional in vestment you should consider talking to your friend in order to arrange a partnership agreement. Also you can make your friend a partner in order to avoid paying him a salary. Instead the person would get paid in for of income redistribution. ââ¬Å"A partnership must file an annual information return to report income, deductions, and gains, etc., from its operations, but is does not pay income taxesâ⬠(Irs, 2010). The fact that partnerships do not pay income taxes is an advantage of this type of business structure. The third type of business structure is the corporation. A corporation can be defined as a business organization organized as a separate legal entity under state corporation law and having ownership divided into transferable shares of stock. (Weygandt, et. al. , 2002). A corporation is a completely separate legal entity from its owner. This means that if the business fails the owner is not legally responsible for the debt of the corporation. Due to the fact that the chances of succeeding in a new business project are low you should seriously considered the corporate structure. The truth about starting a new business is that 50% of new businesses fail within the first year and 95% seize to exist within five years (Schaefer, 2010). There many advantages associated with starting a business in the form of a corporation. The advantages of the corporate structure are listed below: Shareholders have limited liability Corporations can

Explain the contribution of Teresa of Avila to mysticism Essay Example for Free
Explain the contribution of Teresa of Avila to mysticism Essay Transfer-Encoding: chunked ià »? Explain the contribution of Teresa of Avila to mysticism (35) Mysticism is an aspect of religious experience that is little understood. This term has been used to describe experiences that reveal spiritual recognition of truths beyond normal understanding, from the mildly ecstatic to the occult. It has been said that there are certain features which accompany such experiences which enable their recognition, such as a sense of freedom from the limitations of time, space and the human ego. Believers may also experience a sense of ââ¬Å"onenessâ⬠or unity with God, accompanied with bliss and serenity. Mysticism is seen as the closest a human being can ever come to actually meeting God in this life. Mystical experiences can also be classified into two areas: extrovertive, where one experiences unity in the world through the physical senses and introvertive, where the person loses their identity as a separate individual and slowly merges into the divine unity. A key introvertive mystic is Teresa of Avila. In examining her contribution to religious experience, a good place to start is considering her background. Teresaââ¬â¢s background may be key to understanding her enigmatic personality and experiences. She was a woman from a wealthy background and had a turbulent start in life. When she was seven her mother died, and when she was fourteen she ran away to seek martyrdom. She had an alleged love affair with her cousin that tarnished her reputation and effectively made her unmarriable. This, coupled with her obsession with books of chivalry, may have corrupted her view of what love really is. Her father decided to send her into an Augustinian convent where she was very unhappy. This sense of rejection played a major part in her later religious experience. It was while she was in the convent that her religious experiences began. In 1554 she had a deeper conversion when she saw a statue of Jesus after he had been whipped. She was deeply moved and wrote, ââ¬Å"I felt so keenly aware of how poorly I had thanked him for those wounds that, it seems to me, my heart broke. I threw myself down before him with the greatest outpouring of heart. â⬠After this experience she progressed into a life of intense prayer and the Catholic practice of mortification, so much so that he motto became, Lord, either let me suffer or let me die. She was also deeply influenced by the Confessions of Augustine and other theological books ââ¬â although she did not have access to the Bible. Perhaps the single most influential experience she had was when she ââ¬Ëcame back from the deadââ¬â¢ after suffering from what is thought to have been malaria. This increased her notoriety. Moving on, Teresa was encouraged to write about her experiences and her books continue to influence mysticism today. Her two main writings are Way of Perfection and The Interior Castle. Way of Perfection is considered her spiritual autobiography. Here she emphasises the importance of praying mentally as well as vocally. In sixteenth century Spain the common people were encouraged to restrict themselves to vain repetitions of learned-off prayers, Teresa rejected this in favour of a more personal relationship with God. Her superbly inspiring classic on the practice of prayer is as fresh and meaningful today as it was when she first wrote it. The Way of Perfection is a practical guide to prayer setting forth the Saints counsels and directives for the attainment of spiritual perfection. Through the entire work there runs the authors desire to teach a deep and lasting love of prayer beginning with a treatment of the three essentials of the prayer-filled life fraternal love, detachment from created things, and true humility. St. Teresas counsels on these are not only the fruit of lofty mental speculation, but of mature practical experience. In The Interior Castle she compares the soul to a castle with seven rooms, with the Trinitarian God residing in the inner room. Growth in prayer enables the believer to reach a deeper intimacy with God, symbolised by a progressive journey through the rooms of the castle. She also describes the resistance that the Devil places in various rooms, to keep believers from union with God. Throughout, she provides encouragements and advice for spiritual development. Teresaââ¬â¢s writings lack Biblical references due to the Spanish Inquisition restricting access to the scriptures, and this grieved her. William James identified four characteristics of religious experience: ineffability; noetic quality; transiency and passivity. All of these care clearly apparent with Teresaââ¬â¢s experiences. Starting with ineffability, this is when one experiences a feeling that cannot be described to anyone else. She wrote that, ââ¬Å"the soul is fully awake as regards God, but wholly asleep as regards the things of this world. â⬠Secondly, noetic quality is when the mystic experience gives insight into truths unobtainable by the intellect alone. This is also apparent in Theresaââ¬â¢s experiences: ââ¬Å"when I return to myself, it is wholly impossible for me to doubt that I have been in God, and God in me. â⬠Thirdly, transiency. The religious experience does not last for long, usually half an hour or so. Though they are remembered, they are imperfectly recalled, but recognised if they reoccur ââ¬â the recipient usually feels a profound sense of the importance of the experience. Associated with Teresaââ¬â¢s raptures are always visions. Her most famous vision involved her seeing a small angel with a beautiful face holding ââ¬Å"a long golden spearâ⬠tipped with a ââ¬Å"little fireâ⬠which he thrust into her heart. Finally, there is passivity, when the mystic feels as if they have been taken over by a superior power. In Teresaââ¬â¢s case, her visions were sometimes accompanied by levitation or strange screams. It could be this aspect that led many to believe she was possessed by the devil. In terms of impact, Teresa of Avila had a profound influence on religious experience. She the first female saint of the Roman Catholic Church ââ¬â the saint of headache sufferers, rather oddly. She was somewhat of a reformer, emphasising a personal relationship with God above rigid sacramentalism. In 1562 she established the strict Carmelite order in various areas of Spain and her writings continue to be studied by believers today.

Modern tragic hero Essay Example for Free
Modern tragic hero Essay Aristotle defines a tragedy as a form of drama defined by seriousness and dignity and involving a great person who experiences a reversal of fortune. This great person is normally held in high regard and possesses a tragic or fatal flaw which contributes to the reversal of fortune. The character must pass through suffering and trials in which they are brought to their limit and, eventually, the character realises their mistake or flaw, and develops as a result of this. Unfortunately, the development invariably comes too late, and the tragedy ends in the characters death. According to Aristotle, a tragedy must induce fear and pity in the audience. Watching a person held in high regard fall leaves the audience wondering if a single mistake could really lead to such a drastic turn of events. The Crucible was written at a time when Miller was summoned to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee. During the 1940s and early 1950s, the fear of communist sympathisers became so great that under Senator Joseph McCarthy, the committee became paranoid in its search for possible communists. As this was happening, Miller began seeing parallels between the actions of the committee and the witchcraft trials in Salem two hundred years ago: What was manifestly parallel was the guilt, two centuries apart, of holding illicit, suppressed feelings of alienation and hostility toward standard, daylight society. The possession of lists pertaining to possible offenders is a particular link, and Miller fashioned The Crucible around both the events of his time and the Salem witch trials. Miller wrote the play for modern audiences and while John Proctors path is similar to the one defined by Aristotle, there are a number of differences. John Proctor is described as blunt and honest: He had a sharp and biting way with hypocrites, He has a rebellious spirit which leads him to be impulsive and rash on occasions. An example of this is when Parris mentions a faction. Proctor in jest says, Then I must find it and join it. This behaviour typical to Proctor differs a great deal from the repressive norm of the time. His behaviour also leads him to trouble later in the play, as others do not appreciate his more liberal thinking. In Proctors presence a fool felt his foolishness instantly-and a Proctor is always marked for calumny therefore. As a result of his sometimes rebellious attitude, he puts himself in a dangerous position when the hysteria elevates. Proctor is principled and a man of conviction. His refusal to go to church is not motivated by laziness but by a dislike of how Parris runs it. Miller also says that he came to, regard himself as a kind of fraud. Proctor understands that he is not the perfect Christian that he appears to be, and while he remains respected in the village, he himself feels undeserving of such respect because of the sins he has committed. As such, his fear of public humiliation is so great that he is reluctant to act when Elizabeth urges him. To Proctor, the risk of Abigail revealing his sins is too great. Proctor is very weak willed at the start of the play, which highlights his vulnerabilities as a human being while making his change all the more pronounced. He lacks moral courage and strength: strength to do what is right and courage to act, despite the risks on his own reputation. In his actions toward Elizabeth, we see he is loyal and caring. Even though he strayed from his vows, he seeks forgiveness more than anything else and puts off Abigails advances, I will cut off my hand before I reach for you again. He is protective of his wifes feelings, and tries to spare them by deceiving through omission. This is demonstrated when Proctor leaves out that he was alone with Abigail for a moment. However, when Elizabeth finds out about it, she is hurt that he lied, and suspicious of his reasons for doing so. Through this deception, Proctor is inadvertently protecting his own insecurities which, while seemingly non existent to the outside world, he displays in private when with Elizabeth. Proctor lacks confidence in regard to his wife. He feels that he is trying hard to gain her trust but is not getting any response from her: On Saturday let you come with me, and well walk the farm together. This is an obvious attempt to do something romantic with his wife, but Elizabeth is less than enthusiastic. Their inability to face up to their problems and the habit of tip toeing around sensitive subjects prevents the forgiveness that he so craves and keeps their relationship tense. With regard to moral courage, Proctors fear of humiliation makes him indecisive, as the only way to stop Abigails lies is to hurt her. Here he shows his flaws. He doesnt want Abigail to reveal their affair. He doesnt want to hurt her because of his affection and while he knows what she is doing is false, his inaction allows the situation to deteriorate drastically over a short period of time- the start of his fall. Proctor also has a great fear of being judged by others, especially his wife. He says to Elizabeth: Ill not have your suspicion any more, to which Elizabeth replies, John, if it were not Abigail that you must go to hurt, would you falter now? I think not. It is evident that what she says is true, but, because of this, Proctor immediately jumps to his own defence, I confessed, confessed! Some dream I had must have mistaken you for God that day. This reveals his resentment for being judged, and his belief that only God has the right to do so. Elizabeth also points out Proctors confliction and self doubt, I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you, meaning Proctor is punishing himself for his sins, and channelling his guilt by blaming his wife. In this interaction with Elizabeth we truly see how insecure and weak Proctor is, a far cry from the strong outward appearance he shows to others. His inaction stems from his pride, fear and insecurity, and leads to dire consequences for him and Elizabeth. However, as the play progresses, Proctor goes over a sudden and monumental change. Spurred by the arrest of his wife, the innate defiance in him surfaces and Proctor begins to gain moral courage, becoming committed to freeing his wife. Only in the absence of Elizabeth does John discover purpose and tenacity to do what he has to. He is not yet at the point where he can admit his affair openly to stop Abigail, but he begins to see the extent of the hysteria through Mary Warren and resolves to stop it with the aid of Mary Warren, All our old pretence is ripped away-make your peace with it! He must now contend with Marys weak nature, and it is ironic that at the moment of gaining new strength, he must help Mary overcome her weaknesses and fears. Proctor is still scared for his reputation, but the arrest of Elizabeth is the catalyst of his future development.

Study sources E and F and the site at Quarry bank mill. :: essays research papers
I am studying how useful sources E and F are in arriving at an accurate explanation of how apprentices were treated at Quarry Bank Mill in the early 1840s. Source E was written by Robert Hyde Greg in 1843, 7 years after the incident happened. Robert H. Greg was the son of Samuel Greg, he was the original owner of Quarry Bank Mill. By 1836, which was when the Esther Price ran away, Robert H. Greg had inherited the mill. Source F was written in 1838, by a man called John Doherty. He was a campaigner for reducing children?s hours of employment in cotton mills. Doherty had also been in prison for organising pickets. The magistrate was a close friend of Samuel Greg, because of this John Doherty campaigned many times to close down and taint the reputation of Quarry Bank Mill. Both sources E and F are accounts of Esther Price?s escape from Quarry Bank Mill to Liverpool at end of August 1836 with her friend Lucy Garner. Esther Price had asked to go to Liverpool during Wakes week, a holiday week when the factory was shut, but she was refused. She had two reasons for running away, she had heard that her father was ill and wanted to visit him. The other reason was to collect her birth certificate to prove that she was actually older than her indenture said so that she could get a paid job earlier as apprentices were not paid. An indenture was the contract that an apprentice signed to say that the child would work for Mr. Greg for a set amount of years, normally seven, and that if they broke any of the rules of that contract the boss had permission to punish them. In source E it says that Esther price and her friend Lucy Garner ran away from the apprentice house on Saturday night. Lucy came back 5 days later on Thursday and Esther came back 5 days after that on Tuesday. When the girls came back, they were each put into solitary confinement. Lucy Garner did not have her windows boarded up. However Esther Prices did, Robert H. Greg said it was also ?partly to prevent her escape.? It says in source E Robert H. Greg wanted to punish them by cutting off the girls? hair, but his sister sally Greg and Mrs Shawcross, the former superintendent argued against this.

The Politicians Scam: Taxing People Outside Their Voting District :: Politics Political Essays
Politicians' Attempt to Stay in Office: Taxing People Outside Their Voting District The United States is one of the most democratic nations in the world. However, for our elected representatives, government is also a business, and these officials want to do anything they can to stay employed, or get re-elected. There are several ways they can do this, but one way has been used repeatedly since the American Revolution. It has been used in many examples, including the trade wars between the states of the 1780ââ¬â¢s, the taxation of the federal bank by Maryland until 1819, the speed trap in Macks Creek, MO in the 1990ââ¬â¢s, West Virginiaââ¬â¢s current tax on river traffic, increased taxes for hotels and rental cars, and finally in the statesââ¬â¢ dependency on federal grant money. All of these are examples in which the politicians are taxing people outside of their voting district, in hopes of staying in office. The idea behind all of these schemes is that the people paying the taxes and fines are not the people that vote for the local or state politicians creating these laws. Therefore, the people in the politicianââ¬â¢s district receive the benefits of this increased revenue, but don't have any of the cost, causing the elected official to look more favorable. Furthermore, the visitors to the area rarely have an easy way to fight these taxes or fines. They can't vote the officials out of office, and they usually can't avoid the situation. The only choice they have is to comply with the fine or tax, or spend a lot of time and money to fight it in court. The following examples were all devised by politicians who wanted nothing more than to stay in office, and they were created under the same line of thinking ââ¬â take advantage of people who have no way of protesting. These examples all have this common theme, only the implementation and the legality of them differ. This process of taxing others began before the Constitution was even written. Under the Articles of Confederation, the federal government had no control of commerce between the states. Because of this, the states taxed each otherââ¬â¢s goods, creating trade wars. Although they were hurting commerce in the process, the politicians knew they were gaining revenue without alienating their own voters.

Analyzing Danielle Harperââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËA Slice of Sleepââ¬â¢ Essay -- Literary Analy
The great screenwriter and director Robert Bresson is quoted as saying ââ¬Å"Make visible what, without you, might never have been seen.â⬠This statement is incredibly true of Danielle Harperââ¬â¢s screenplay ââ¬ËA Slice of Sleepââ¬â¢. Harper has created a world full of colour that reads to be a world of bleak darkness as it can be joyfully bright and uplifting. The word ââ¬Ëjourneyââ¬â¢ is much overused, but perfectly describes the contents of Harperââ¬â¢s script. The following discourse will be looking at how Harper has followed screenwriting conventions, such as the ââ¬Ëwhereââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëwhatââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëwhyââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëhowââ¬â¢ and using popular screenwriting theorist texts such as Robert McKeeââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËStoryââ¬â¢ (1999) and Syd Fieldââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËThe Definitive Guide to Screenwritingââ¬â¢ (2003)as guides to analysing Harperââ¬â¢s script. The script is split into three parts; each part is identifiable by a number of factors, the use of the starry nightââ¬â¢s sky, the change in room colour collections, the sleeping patterns of the characters and the change of tone in the voice-over. Harperââ¬â¢s screen play is a theoretically unconventional collective of scenes, which primarily focusââ¬â¢ on the sleeping behaviour of its habitantsââ¬â¢. Characterisation is dictated throughout by the colour schemes of the various abodes. ââ¬ËA slice of Sleepââ¬â¢ offers a sociological view of a cross section of society, which is enabled by the use of abstract characterisation. The first two sections of the screenplay take place within single rooms, mainly bedrooms. These rooms have all carefully been colour coordinated to differentiate between the different scenes; this also allows the tone of the scene to be set. Harper states in her covering letter how she wanted to create ââ¬Å"pronounced distinction instantly between the different segments of the scrip... ...that is strengthened by the use of a narrator, whose changes in tone match the production design revealing an intimate and thought provoking tale. Employees Resist Unions Essay
The National Labor Relations Act, a United States federal law that was passed in 1935, was aimed at restricting negative reactions elicited by employers when workers in the private sector take part in strikes or form labor unions (National Labor Board, 2010). Also referred to as the Wagner Act, the law seeks to protect the worker from an unfair treatment by the employer, which included prohibition of formation of labor unions by employees; employerââ¬â¢s active participation and domination in labor organizations; and employee discrimination due to charges filed against the employer (National Labor Board, 2010). Current statistics indicate that the American union membership, specifically in the private sector, has declined to under 9% since the enactment of the National Labor Relations act (White, 2010). Similarly, periodic surveys carried out by several market research farms show that few Americans are now willing to join labor unions compared to the first half of the twentieth century. A report from one of the telephone surveys carried out by Rasmussen Reports indicates that 47% of the unionized workers are of the opinion that most workers are unwilling to join labor organizations (White, 2010). One shocking statistic from the report shows that 81% of non- unionized workers would not want to join a labor union while only 9% were willing to join. As opposed to workers in the private sector, government workers are more likely to belong to a labor organization (White, 2010). There are several drawbacks associated with unions that discourage potential members. A high fee required by unions is in itself the most discouraging factor, especially in this era of global financial crunch. Another drawback for joining labor organization is that that the worker looses individuality. Labor organizations will give a ruling or decision based on a simple majority, but the decision by the majority might not necessarily represent views of all the unionized workers. Individual settlement of disputes between an employer and the employee may not be allowed by the union, even in a case whereby the agreement seems to be beneficial to both parties. Union leaders in this case make a decision concerning a workerââ¬â¢s individual complaint, a decision which sometimes might not be satisfactory to the worker. This lack of individual representation and bargain is of much concern for many employees. One other concern voiced by the un-unionized workers is that members can be fined for engaging in activities that are deemed ââ¬Ëunconstitutionalââ¬â¢ to the unionââ¬â¢s regulations. Such activities range from seeking membership and representation from different unions to even breaking strike regulations. These fines can be substantial for the worker to pay and this can be enforced in a court of law. In conclusion, labor organizations are becoming less popular with time. Correct administrative and legal structures need to be put in place if the trend is to be reversed. Finally, public awareness on the benefits of labor unions should be carried out if the trend is to be reversed. References White, J. (2010).
